Spencer from Newton Dee, who has followed with great interest the progress of the community’s new Phoenix Community Centre, played an important part in the recent ceremony held to mark its completion.
‘There was me standing there with Tom’, he recalls. ‘I pulled the red cloth off and held it in the air.’ Underneath gleamed the Finishing Stone – a copper plaque set in Scottish granite with an engraving of the Phoenix bird.
Placed in the centre of the paved circular area at the front of the Centre, it lies directly above the Beginning Stone, which Spencer laid last year.
‘I didn’t find it difficult’, he says of the ceremony. ‘I knew I’d manage.’
