Harriet's new role

Harriet, a resident of The Grange community, has found a new route to achieving her aspirations, as a trainee at nearby Taurus Crafts.

A unique centre

Taurus Crafts is unique in our ‘family’ of communities. For visitors it’s a centre of creativity, with an ever-changing programme of art, craft and seasonal activities. Within its cobbled yards there are artisan boutiques to discover, a café serving delicious fare and speciality shops offering local, fairly traded and environment-friendly products. And a wider purpose underpins it all: providing trainee opportunities, work placements and supported employment to people with learning disabilities.

'I've learned a lot of things'

Harriet is a trainee in the Gift Shop two days a week. ‘I set it as a challenge for myself’, she says.

She feels it’s moved her skills and confidence forward: ‘I’ve learned a lot of things. I’ve learned to use the pricing machine, how to tidy up the shelves and make them look nice and decorated with the new things that come in. And how to help customers and give them advice.’

Achieving goals

It’s helped Harriet feel confident to contribute in other ways, too. For example, if a colleague in another shop needs to pop out, she’s able to step in to keep an eye on things. She particularly enjoys helping run the Paint Your Own Pottery  activities for children.

It’s also encouraged Harriet to apply for another local role – and she got it! By the time you read this she’ll be volunteering to help children learn Makaton sign language. ‘It’s really good news’, she says. ‘I like helping children.’

Offering opportunities

Talking to Harriet, it’s easy to see why being a trainee has proved very popular here at Taurus. To help meet the demand, the community has recently opened two new shops – Fair Trade Home and Fashion, focusing on clothing and home furnishings, and Paper and Planes , which sells stationery, craft materials and toys.
