Stepping forward with Shared Lives
We’re thrilled to announce our Berith & Camphill Community in Stourbridge has begun delivering an innovative service called Shared Lives across the Borough of Dudley.

It’s an exciting addition to the support we offer within our communities and it means we can use our experience, values and high standards to support many more people locally.

Helping people live ordinary lives

Shared Lives matches people who wish to experience family and community life with specially trained Shared Lives Carers, who hold a real desire to help someone achieve their full potential in life.

‘As a starting point, we often say, it’s a little bit like fostering’, explains Kate Morgan, our Shared Lives Registered Manager. ‘But Shared Lives is for adults, and you don’t foster adults – you support the person to have a good quality of life and to do what they want to do. We enable the individual to make their own choices and take control so as to maximise greater independence.’

While day-to-day family life is supported by the Shared Lives Carers, the social and work activities of our Berith and Camphill Community will also offer positive experiences to take part in events and celebrations and connect with an already established support network.

A perfect match

Careful matching ensures there’s a close fit between a person’s needs and aspirations with that of the Carer’s character, skill-set and family home. Married couple Imran and Sehrish are two newly-approved Shared Lives Carers whose family home includes their three young daughters and Imran’s parents.

Imran says, ‘Caring and giving something back to the community is something I’ve always been passionate about. When I saw the advert for Shared Lives, I thought “that’s perfect for me and my family”. The individual coming to live with us will be part of our household and I am sure the match will be right because the process has been so thorough. It’s a very exciting project.’

Karen, another newly-approved Carer, agrees: “It’s a brilliant scheme. I like the focus on independence and supporting the development of skills. I’m really looking forward to it. I can’t wait!’

We are very proud to be delivering this service throughout the Borough of Dudley and supporting more people to live the lives they wish to lead.
