Those who know our colourful, cheerful Café on the Corner in St Albans know what a great place it is. As well as serving up delicious food and scrummy bakes, it’s got a friendly atmosphere that makes everyone feel welcome – be they a customer, a seasoned member of the team, or a newcomer like Mike, the café’s manager.
’The coffee's even better’
Mike’s arrival has been very exciting as he’s an expert on coffee. He earned his coffee stripes at some top cafés and restaurants so you can imagine how delighted we are that he’s now part of our St Albans Community ‘family’.
‘We sell a lot of coffee’, Mike says ‘and now we’re introducing more speciality drinks.’ That’s a new attraction for customers, and has brought opportunities for people to learn new skills. Mike’s background also means he’s strong on supporting people to feel confident in delivering tip-top customer service.
’Telling our story’
There’s a job to suit everyone. Alex, for example, enjoys doing the laundry; without him it would pile up. And one of Joanna’s specialities is making scones: ‘I’ve been told I’m the Queen of Scones. So that’s quite fun. We all do different tasks. I like the fact that it’s a team effort. We all have good times together. And we all have responsibilities.’
Recently, everyone’s been working together to create a new menu, with an emphasis on using tasty local produce to enhance sustainability. They’ve also made a photo wall with pictures and information about themselves: they’re proud of their story and the contribution they’re making to the wider community.
’Come and enjoy’
If you’re ever able to stop by the Café on the Corner, at 39 Catherine Street, St Albans, please do. Or, Alex has another idea for how you can visit: “We have a Facebook page. You can see our pictures. I hope you’ll “like” us.’
